Here's the real reason why Lucille Ball dyed her hair that iconic red color

We won't pretend to be so high and mighty and act like we've never enjoyed a good piece of gossip. However, sometimes a fabricated story doesn't just entertain; when told enough times, people begin to believe that the lie is actually the truth, simply based on word of mouth.

According to an old Hollywood story, retold in the Fort Lauderdale News, Lucille Ball dyed her hair red after being convinced by a Hollywood hairdresser at MGM.

"The hair is blonde, but the soul, it is fire," claimed the hairdresser. "We will dye the hair red."

Of course, Ball did have a fiery personality. It was one of the things that made her such a talented actor. However, Ball was also a realist and quickly put the hair dye rumor to rest. While Ball's bright red hair has become an iconic part of the actor's look, she insisted that changing her hair color was merely a business decision.

"That story is ridiculous," said Ball. "Red was a happy color. It was good with my eyes, and it photographed well. It turned out to be a successful color. There's nothing more to it than that."

Ball preferred to keep things honest regarding her career, including her shortcomings as well as her successes.

"What I am is brave," said Ball. "I have never been scared. Not when I did movies, certainly not when I was a model, and not when I did I Love Lucy."
