Anson Williams actually enjoyed the live audience of Happy Days
Any good success story can take us from one opportunity to another. That's exactly what Anson Williams did, and he was all the happier for it.
You might know Williams better as Potsie Weber of Happy Days. While Potsie was known for being quite an awkward young man, he sure had quite a voice on him. The character was able to demonstrate his musical ability in more than one episode, a plot point that, as Williams claimed, was by design.
During an interview with the Longview News-Journal, Williams revealed that he was able to use Happy Days to his advantage by seeking an audience for his musical career in television viewers.
"I've been able to turn Happy Days into a learning experience by traveling, meeting so many people, and spreading my music," he said.
You can attempt to explain Potsie's awkwardness by arguing it's just simple youthful discomfort. Similarly, Williams felt that as the character of Happy Days grew up, he'd have the opportunity for more growth as an actor.
"We're finally getting out of high school and we're all going to be going to Community College," he said. "This should open up a lot of new venues, and some characters."
While many might be taken aback by the idea of performing in front of a live audience, Winters was actually glad for the change.
"The average TV show is taped scene by scene with one camera. Happy Days are rehearsed throughout the week and done before an audience on Friday evenings for the final take," he said. "Doing the show before a live audience gives the actor an honest reaction with no laugh tracks."
"I think it's terrific," he said during an interview with The Columbia Record. "I feel it's healthy because people are having fun and that's what life is all about."
