Aspiring to attain popularity, wealth and the attention of beautiful, money-hungry blondes, luckless teenager Dobie Gillis (Dwayne Hickman) will not be discouraged as he works toward that which he desires. Along with beatnik buddy Maynard G. Krebs (Bob Denver), Dobie carries out his bound-to-fail schemes while trying to get the better of the rich kids and make his parents happy.

Maynard finds an abandoned baby in the park and for his own sentimental reasons doesn't want to inform the authorities. Dobie tries to set his good buddy straight and find a home for the infant.

Dobie receives his enlistment letter from Uncle Sam, which prompts a flashback to the 1940s when Mr. and Mrs. Gillis were eagerly expecting their baby.
