R.I.P. Bob Mackie, Emmy-winning designer who clothed the likes of Cher and Carol Burnett

Bob Mackie, influential designer who has been called "The Sultan of Sequins" and "The Rajah of Rhinestones", has passed away.

The designer worked with Carol Burnett on all 11 seasons of The Carol Burnett Show. Mackie not only designed what Burnett was going to wear, but he also created the costumes for the show's dancers, guest stars, and the entire cast of performers. He created around 65 to 70 costumes per week for The Carol Burnett Show, and then an additional 10 to 20 pieces for other hotshot Hollywood clients.

By the time The Carol Burnett Show ended, Mackie's resume was filled with pages of colorful designs and costumes. According to Burnett, Mackie created around 17,000 costumes for the series. Perhaps the most famous design of his on the show was the "curtain dress" in the iconic "Went With the Wind" sketch.

During his time in Hollywood, Mackie was nominated for 32 Emmy awards, winning 9, won a Tony Award, and was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Costume Design three times.

Another longtime collaborator of Mackie's was Cher, who donned his glamorous gowns on The Sonny and Cher Comedy Hour. He also created Cher's unforgettable look from the 1986 Academy Awards, where she wore a bejeweled loincloth, chain-link top, and a huge feathered Mohawk headdress.

He also worked with Elton John, for whom Mackie created the classic sequined Los Angeles Dodgers concert costume. Other collaborators included Dolly Parton, Diana Ross, Madonna and Lucille Ball.

He stepped in front of the camera and guest-starred as himself on two episodes of The Love Boat in 1981.

The award-winning costume designer was 87 years old.
